Michael Gao: Salt Land

Mandy Zhang Art is pleased to present Salt Land, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Michael Gao, exploring the artist’s ongoing fascination with coastal terrain, mineral deposits, and the slow choreography of erosion. Drawing on childhood memories of salt flats and tidal marshes, Gao renders landscapes suspended between the geological and the intimate — crystalline surfaces that read as much like skin or memory as stone. Through layered washes and encrusted texture, the exhibition considers land not as static backdrop but as something lived-in, weathered, and quietly accumulating meaning over time. In Salt Land, Gao invites us to look closely at the terrain we so often pass over, finding in its grain and residue a record of both place and self. Opening night is 8 October till 14 November.
