Veranda Books are thrilled to welcome back writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo and historian and writer Paul French. Longtime friends, it’s always a pleasure to hear Xiaolu and Paul in conversation this time discussing their newly-published books.
After decades living in England, Xiaolu Guo travelled to her native China with her 11-year-old daughter to show her where she came from, and to discover what remained of the magnificent and cosmopolitan Tang Dynasty. From this trip emerged Everyday Tang, a travelogue and historical reflection on a golden age of Chinese civilisation.
Paul French’s latest book The Last Emperor of China tells the story of China’s boy-ruler Puyi and his young bride Wanrong in the dying days of the Manchu dynasty. French combines deep, original research with the skill of ‘a master storyteller’ (the FT’s words, not ours – though we don’t disagree!)
This promises to be a fascinating evening and we hope you can join us – drinks from 6.30, conversation at 7
